Rookie-ball (LL) Week 1 Highlights

May 27, 2013

Team Kubota wasn’t able to string enough hits together to light up the scoreboard against the A’s but they played with heart, grit and hustle.  In their first action of the season the team showed great effort.  The timing was a bit off on the bats but Griffin Dyck pounded out two hits to lead the way.  Wily old-timers Stefan Jacobs and Carter Dyck did a great job at catcher during the game and also showed strong swings at the plate.  Cullen Wilson showed great enthusiasm at first base while Ethan Tatomir made a couple great throws on plays hit to him while playing pitcher.  Rookie Addison Dyck singled in her very first game of rookie ball. Dylan flashed his leather while scooping up some hot shots at the hot corner.  Ian McPherson and Sage Batke showed smooth swings at the plate and good form in the field!

Team Kubota will take on Schroeder Electric this Wednesday.

2013 Rookie-Ball Season Update

March 18, 2013

There have been some slight changes made to the Rookie-ball division for the 2013 campaign.

With the introduction of the Tyke program, we are hoping to raise the level of play for all Rookie-ball aged players this season.
So for the 2013 season, the following changes will be put into affect:

1. The tee and yellow Jugs balls will no longer be used in the first 2 weeks.
2. There will no longer be any need for a rover between 1st and 2nd base and only 10 players will be allowed on the field at one time.

We’re also looking into adding playoffs. This will be discussed during the coaches meeting.

The schedule will be the same as last year with games taking place on Wednesday’s from 6:30 to 8pm and practices on Saturday mornings.
The season is tentatively scheduled to begin on Wednesday, May 22nd and wrapping-up on Saturday, July 27th.

Stay tuned for more updates throughout the year.
Thanks!

August 28th Athlete of the Week!

September 5, 2012

Congratulations to Mitchell Myers for being chosen as Athlete of the Week for August 28th!

During the 2012 Rookie-Ball Select team, Mitchell went 11-for-14 in the tournament, including 3 triples – two of which came during a bases-loaded scenario.
He was also our starting third baseman and made several defensive plays over the four games.
Great job Mitchell!

Rookie Selects 2012 Tournament Results

August 27, 2012

The 2012 Rookie-Ball Select team represented their town extremely well this past weekend in the annual Select tournament.

The team started off with the tough task of facing the tournament favourites, the Tecumseh Rangers.
The kids were a bit jittery to start the game and found themselves down 12-2 after the first two innings.
But then their defence settled down and only allowed 2 more runs in the next 2 innings.
Unfortunately, they were only able to muster up 2 more runs over the next 3 innings and the game was called short due to the 10-run mercy rule after 5 innings.

Despite a rough start, the kids played very well, making several good defensive plays, led by third-baseman, Mitchell Myers and the one-two combo of shortstop Parker Morin and second baseman Matteo Ruggirello.

Leading the way on offence was Evan Benko going 3-for-3, Jessica Johnson & Gage Ramsey both going 2-for-2 , Aiden Seabourne & Ruggirello going 2-for-3 and both Jack McCormick and Charley Cope each going 1-for-2.

In their second game against Woodslee, the bats and gloves really heated up with both providing a stellar defence and a potent offence en route to a 20-6 victory.
Benko stayed perfect with another 3-for-3 performance, and both Ruggirello and Johnson went 4-for-4.
Seabourne, Ramsey and Carter Dyck all went 3-for-4, youngster Noah Schroeder hammered out 2 hits in his 3 at-bats while Jack McCormick and Morin went 2-for-4, including an in-the-park homerun for “Yellow Light” Morin.
But the Silver Slugger award for this game belonged to Myers who was 3-for-4 with two triples, one of which cleared the bases.

With the initial two-game round-robin portion completed the Knights went on to the sudden-death playoff portion, matching up with a young, but determined Amherstburg club.

Feeling quite confident after their victory over Woodslee, the boys (and girl) of Kingsville, kept the train rolling with another lopsided 23-11 victory.
Seabourne led off his team and went a perfect 4-for-4, with a double that scored two runs to start the 2nd inning. Ruggirello, went 3-for-4 and scored with all four plate appearances.
Benko went 3-for-4, including a double to get his team up 2-0 in the first inning.
Myers continued with his hitting display going 4-for-4 and another triple in the fourth with the bases juiced.
Morin’s hot bat was still sizzling from the Woodslee game as the veteran shortstop went 4-for-4 as well.
Ramsey provided more offence hitting 3-for-4 and continued to dominate at first-base making several nice catches, including a few that had him stretching to his limit.
Johnson 3-for-4, Dyck 3-for-3, Schroeder 1-for-2 with a SAC, McCormick 2-for-3 and Abram Fehr went 3-for-3 and had completed several nice plays from the pitchers mound.
With a playoff round victory in the books, the Knights were off to the quarter-finals to play an undefeated Essex squad.

Kingsville celebrating after a big victory against Amherstburg.

Essex had been having it’s way with most of their opposition so far in the tournament and Kingsville knew they had a tall task ahead of them.

The kids got off to a rocky start, spotting Essex 11 runs after the first two innings and found themselves down by 7-runs heading into the third inning.
Undeterred, the Knights fired up the bats and rang up 6-runs to cut the lead to 1-run.
However, they were unable to hold off a very determined Essex squad who eventually defeated the home-town team by a score of 23-10.

All of the kids played very well in this game.
From a solid Benko and Schroeder behind the plate, to McCormick and Cope providing great defence in the outfield, the kids in blue represented Kingsville very well.
Key performances in Game 4 go to Cope, Dyck, Johnson, Myers who went 3-for-3, Ruggirello, Seabourne, Morin and Schroeder 2-for-3 and Fehr going 2-for-2.

The coaching staff is extremely proud of these players. Their only losses came from Tecumseh and Essex, who battled it out in the Finals. Great job kids!

Selects Take on Harrow Under the Lights

August 19, 2012

It was another quality outing by the Kingsville Rookie-Ball Selects. This time, they hosted the Harrow Rams Select team on Friday night.

It was a perfect night for ball under the lights as both teams traded big hits and great defensive plays.

In the end, Harrow took a convincing 25-5 victory, but the kids from Kingsville showed a lot of heart and determination.

Gage Ramsey led the team with a 3-for-3 evening, while both Mitchell Myers and Matteo Ruggirello went 2-for-3.
Shortstop, Parker Morin, had another strong defensive game while Aiden Seabourne, Evan Banko and Noah Schroeder did a tremendous job behind the plate.

Up next, they have their toughest task to date when they take on the Belle River Selects this Monday at 6:30 PM in Kingsville.

Mitchell Myers rockets a ball to right-field in the 3rd inning.

Evan Banko makes a great unassisted play to get out a very determined Harrow Ram sliding into third.

More action shots! Thanks Rob!

Selects Display Great Skill in Exhibition Game against Tecumseh

August 15, 2012

The Rookie-ball Kingsville Selects traveled out to Tecumseh to take on their Selects in an exhibition game prior to the Select tournament next weekend.

The game was a bit of a stalemate after the first two innings with both teams displaying rock solid defences.
Second baseman Matteo Ruggirello and first-baseman Gage Ramsey hooked up several times to complete a number of outs.

In the third, Tecumseh broke things open with a 6-run inning, but the kids from Kingsville refused to back down.
In the fifth inning, Aiden Seabourne got his team started with a stand-up double after hammering a ball that rolled deep into the infield.
Jack McCormick followed that up with a single of his own when Charley Cope, who went 3-for-3, knocked in Aiden with a single down the third base-line.
Evan Banko, Gage and Matteo all followed that with singles of their own to help put three runs on the board for the visiting team.

Tecumseh’s bats came alive as well, scoring a handful of runs over the next 3 innings, but the Kingsville Selects made some terrific plays to keep the score within striking distance.

Gage caught a tremendous pop-fly into right-field, Charley Cope made a great play at second, Evan forced a player out at 2nd, and Mitchell Myers had a half-dozen unassisted outs at third base.

While Tecumseh came away with the victory, all of the kids played extremely well. Parker Morin was rock solid at shortstop, Carter Dyck made excellent contact at the plate, Abram Fehr did a great job covering from the outfield and Noah Schroeder had a great hit in the 7th inning as well as man the catcher position with tremendous precision.

The coaching staff was very impressed with how the kids played in their first exhibition game of the season.
There were too many great plays to count and all the kids showed a lot of hustle and baseball acumen on the field.
Not only did they display skills on the field, they were equally as impressive off the field. There was a lot of positive chatter happening from the dugout and on the field.

Next up, practice on Saturday at 9am before taking on the Belle River Selects on Monday, August 20th in Kingsville at 6:30 PM.

Gage scoops a grounder at first-base for an out.

Noah Schroeder dons the gear behind the plate.

Noah hustles down to first after a solid hit.

Evan gets ready for his turn behind the plate.

Charley scores from 3rd.

Some great sportsmanship shown after the game.

Tecumseh was a terrific host on a great night for baseball.

Getting Stronger!

August 4, 2012

The Selects took to the diamonds again early Saturday morning.
Working on the fundamentals, the boys and girl from Kingsville, look to fine-tune their skills on route to the 2012 Selects Tournament.

Next up, an exhibition game against Leamington on Friday night, August 10th.

Check out the action:

…or, non action. 😉

2012 Selects Prepare for Tournament

August 2, 2012

The 2012 Rookie Selects took the field in preparation for the August 24th tournament.
They have some large shoes to fill as last years club ran the table, going undefeated on route to the 2011 Championship.

While there are no returning players from last years championship team, this years club is showing signs of that it could make some waves on it’s own.

The kids will be back on the field this Saturday before taking on a Leamington club in exhibition action next Friday, August 10th at 8pm for a night game under the lights.

The players take a drink before heading back out to the field.

Jessica waits on the on-deck circle before terrorizing a few balls during batting practice.

The kids gather to get a few words of encouragement from perhaps the finest coaching staff ever assembled.

Charley gets himself set in-between batters during his infield set.
